Christianity and the Concept of Freeing the Innocent

Prisoner / Helping the Oppressed

the Bible also teaches that freeing the innocent and helping the oppressed is a virtuous and righteous act. Old Testament

  1. Isaiah 61:1

“The Lord has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.”

This shows that freeing prisoners is directly in line with God’s will.

  1. Psalm 146:7

“He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets prisoners free.”

God Himself is described as the One who grants freedom to prisoners.

New Testament

  1. Matthew 25:36 – Jesus Christ (ʿĪsā عليه السلام) said:

“I was in prison and you came to visit me.”

Helping and visiting a prisoner is regarded as serving Jesus himself.

  1. Hebrews 13:3

“Remember those in prison as if you were together with them, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.”
